You can appreciate something and still outgrow it

Hi Reader,

Sometimes the hardest thing to reconsider is something that worked.

A role helped you become more confident. A routine gave your days structure. A goal got you moving when you needed a reason to begin.

You can trace good changes back to it. So when it starts to feel less right, even questioning it can feel ungrateful.

But gratitude for what something gave you can coexist with an honest look at where it belongs now.

Perhaps a promotion once felt like the obvious next step. After doing more of the work it involves, you’ve discovered that you prefer teaching, making things, or solving problems yourself.

Or perhaps training for races helped you build a running habit. You still enjoy running. You just no longer want every run to serve a finish time.

In both cases, something valuable can remain even if the original goal changes.

Of course, a difficult stretch deserves a closer look. Boredom, frustration, and slow progress can be part of doing something that still matters. Before deciding you’ve outgrown it, ask whether the mismatch keeps returning, including on the better days.

One thing to try

Choose one role, routine, or goal you’ve been reconsidering. Finish these three sentences:

  • This has helped me…
  • What I want from it now is…
  • A sensible next step would be…

Keep the last line small and specific. You might adjust the routine, explore a different kind of work, or have a conversation about handing over a responsibility.

Sometimes you’ll choose to keep going with a clearer reason. Sometimes you’ll change the form. Sometimes you’ll begin planning a careful ending, taking account of your responsibilities and anyone affected.

There’s no need to make the past look worse to justify a different future. You can be glad you chose something then and thoughtful about choosing again now.

What’s something you still appreciate but would choose differently today? Hit reply and tell me.

Have a thoughtful week,

Samphy
